Contemporary Music CDs featuring harp guitar

As with Players, the recordings of contemporary players are separated into two groups: "Conventional" and "Non-conventional." Please note that these classifications are not based on musical style or skill.

The first group we may consider "conventional" harp guitar music. Generally, these musicians all play the most  recognizable basic form of harp guitar - that which contains sub-bass "harp" strings below the standard neck. An increasingly common form adds "super-treble" harp strings on the opposite side of the neck, while some bold individuals add additional banks of strings. These recordings include CDs by full-time harp guitar-exclusive players, full-time musicians who utilize harp guitar as a small to large part of their material, various part-time players (who may or not play the instrument exclusively), and amateurs. The commonality is the general type of instrument mentioned previously, and the fact that these players all utilize (i.e. play, by distinct, individual  plucking) the various harp strings of their instruments.

The second group of players includes those who may be considered "non-conventional" or "peripheral" harp guitarists. The former may include players of more esoteric and unfamiliar forms of harp guitars, while the latter may include players of  harp guitars who use the "harp" strings of their instruments in a much more limited capacity (or their use is as yet unconfirmed).

The Gibson appears on one solo - "Legend of the Fountain" on Watercolors, plus background on a track of New ChautauquaThe liner notes of the early Metheny albums all list a "15-string harp guitar" - it is possible that this Gibson was a rare 9-bass version, a few of which are now known. -GM

From Rajan: "The guitar in question is a one off that I commissioned to be built by Oakwood instruments (see Luthiers page - GM). It is the only one in existence. The sympathetic strings are strummed sometimes and the tuning varies depending on the Raga I'm playing at the time. At present I have one set tuned to: D E F G A Bb C# D and the other set to: D E F# G# A B C# D. I have only recorded 1 album with it - Good Fortune (my latest) and all the tracks use this guitar."

O Reua Pasquale Taraffo was a virtuoso harp guitarist and composer from Genova, Italy. He lived from 1887 to 1937. I believe the recordings on this CD would have been made in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The sound quality is quite good for recordings from that era. The first 11 tracks on the CD are harp guitar solos. Tracks 12-18 are duos with his brother Pietro. Tracks 19 and 20 include Pietro and a mandolinist. Tracks 23 and 24 seem to include Pietro on harmonica. - FD
