Some of you with spouses, families, or simply extra time on your hands (don’t I wish) have been asking about side trips and other activities around the Dallas area while at the 10th anniversary Harp Guitar Gathering.  As if you’ll have any energy left.  (Yes, it’s gonna be a wild one!)

Host Joe Morgan just headed off to the Winfield Guitar Festival (he’ll be hanging and playing with SB, Andy Wahlberg, Dan LaVoie and likely many more harp guitarists) – but before he left he put together this full selection of great links and suggestions (I added one of my own at the end).

From Joe:

“As far as other activities, I can suggest a couple of websites.

“For Dallas information, go to: visitdallas.com or traveltex.com.

“For information about Fort Worth, go to: fortworth.com.

“For info about the entire DFW area, try: dfwandbeyond.com.

“Dallas and Fort Worth are both home to nice museums though the Fort Worth museums are probably better known.

“You can find some of that information here.  Though I haven’t been to all of them, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, The Kimbell Art Museum, The Modern Art Museum and the Sid Richardson Museum of Western Art are all highly regarded.  If you are interested in the Old West, Fort Worth is also home to the Stockyards National Historic District.  They still have a cattle drive through the stockyards twice a day.

“Some of the Dallas museums are also well known.  A couple of them are in the Dallas Arts Districtict.  The Sixth Floor Museum (below) is in Downtown Dallas and is devoted to the John F. Kennedy assassination.  It is located on the sixth floor of the old School Book Depository Building where Lee Harvey Oswald is said to have fired the shots that killed President Kennedy.

“If you would like to spend some time outdoors, the Dallas Arboretum and the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens (below) are nice.

“If you would like to get away from the big city for a day, you might consider a side trip to Glen Rose, Texas, which is about an hour to the west on Highway 67.  Glen Rose is home to Dinosaur Valley State Park which contains some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world.  Also near Glen Rose is the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center which is involved in conservation work and breeding programs for endangered species.  You can take guided tours or drive yourself on the self-guided tour which is several miles long.  We’ve been there several times and always enjoy the trip.

“Hope this information helps.  If you have other questions about anything in the area, please let me know and I’ll do my best to give you an answer.

“I look forward to meeting you all at the Harp Guitar Gathering.  Have a safe trip and we’ll see you in November.

All the best,

Joe Morgan”

I see Joe missed the one thing I want to see in Texas – and that’s Andy Wahlberg playing “A Hard Day’s Night” on his Dyer while riding a mechanical bull and seeing how many verses he can get through before being thrown off.  Takers, anyone?!
